Lance Marchel at UNTITLED, Miami Beach

November 30 – December 4, 2016

Los Ojos is pleased to present a solo installation by Lance Marchel at UNTITLED, Miami Beach. Marchel creates sculptures in resin and polyurethane foam, casting unexpected objects ranging from cashews and almonds to thrift store fabrics into vessels and slabs. His pieces taxonomize ready-made containers while relating their volumes to to the scale of the human body. Marchel’s work employs tactility as a sensory experience resistant to image. He creates sculptures with a painterly sensibility through a mastery of pigment and color.

Conceptually, Marchel is interested in queering the language of taste. Specifically, he is fascinated by the aesthetics of thrift stores, where cultural detritus is mined and repackaged. Marchel’s sculptures change our expectations and values by elevating the everyday while destabilizing the lofty aesthetics of minimalism.

Marchel was born in Wisconsin in 1986 and studied mechanical engineering before deciding to pursue a BFA in sculpture and painting from University of Wisconsin–Madison. He earned his MFA from Yale in 2014.
